Don’t Let Cataracts Cloud Your Vision

Over 50% of people aged 65 and older have a cataract in one or both eyes. As the cataract progresses, vision deteriorates, leading to a decreased quality of life. Fortunately, cataract surgery can easily treat this condition.

What Are Cataracts?

Cataracts are cloudy patches that develop on the lens of your eye. Cataracts can cause blurred or double vision, may increase light sensitivity and interfere with driving, especially at night. Without cataract surgery, millions of people around the world would be unable to see clearly.

The most common symptoms include:
  • Blurred or double vision
  • Trouble seeing at night
  • Sensitivity to glare
  • Colored halos around lights
  • Colors appearing more faded
  • Requiring brighter light for reading

Great people and very thorough exam! I recently went for another exam and again it was very thorough... . I had ordered new glasses and the woman said they would call when they were ready and I could just stop by to pick them up. Well I stopped by and the only person who could give me my glasses was out to lunch! They asked if I could wait 30 mins or so. I had no time to wait she said your best bet is to come after 2:00 so again I stopped by after 2:30 and she was out to lunch and again she said could you wait 25 minutes! I told the receptionist that this was very inconventient and left. I called that Thurdsay and left a voice mail to make an appt for Friday at 12:00 to pick up my glasses, no one returned my call. I called Monday and the receptionist said just stop in the women should be here, she might not go to lunch until 12:30 it just depends on when the manager goes to lunch! I said I really do not care about any of that, I said can I stop in between 12:00 and 12:15 today yes or no! She said yes I went and was there maybe 5 min The new womaen was very nice and efficent she fitted me with my glasses and I left. Do not drop in, make an appt to get fitted for your glasses! They really need to change this policy.

Warning: lengthy review! Before coming here, I saw the same eye doctor since I first got glasses in ... 2nd grade (I am 25 now). Although I loved my previous eye doctor, I decided to try a new office because I was treated poorly by the office staff there. I chose Dr. Guy based on the positive reviews on Google and I am so happy I did! The office staff is incredibly kind and helpful. Dr. Guy spent 2 hours with me at my first visit doing a complete glasses and contact exam plus dilation. I really felt like he did an extremely thorough exam and he patiently answered my questions and concerns. I was given two kinds of contacts to sample before choosing which ones I wanted. Then I worked with Valeriy to choose my glasses. I was willing to spend a high amount on these because I never buy full strength glasses due to my high prescription (-8.00 in both eyes). I always had trouble with minimizing facial distortion because my prescription is so awful, but Valeriy helped me choose the best frames and lenses to accommodate this issue (rounder frame and higher index digital lenses). For the first time in years I actually love how I look in glasses! Also, at my last office it used to take weeks for my glasses to come in because of the high prescription. Here, I got my glasses 5 days after picking them out and getting all the measurements done! My entire experience here was positive from start to finish and I am so happy I found them. Thank you all at Family Vision Center 🙂

My 10 yo son got ortho-K lenses at Family Vision Center in the summer of 2019. Dr. Guy is very profe... ssional and kind - my son introduced Dr. Guy as "the nicest doctor ever" to his little sister. He has been doing very well with the lenses and taking good care of them, thanks to good teaching and close follow-ups with Dr. Guy. I am very satisfied with the result and service so far. I personally think the cost is reasonable given multiple follow-ups with numerous eye exams, always with Dr. Guy. I also like that the clinic appointment is almost always readily available and very quick. He had been initially referred to the other vision clinic by his ophthalmologist which was the only place the doctor knew prescribing ortho-K lenses . However the earliest appointment was 5 months far with that eye clinic. I looked up every eye clinic website in Rochester and called the clinics which introduces ortho-K lenses on their homepage. I got to know FVC with the 4th or 5th call and made an appointment in 1 week. It is such a huge gap in waiting time almost made me feel dumb and unreal. FVC is probably one of the very few places in Rochester which serves ortho-K lenses now. I strongly recommend here if you're interested in the ortho-K lenses.

Had an awesome experience getting a way overdue eye exam. I was hesitant at first to do an eye dilat... ion exam but Dr. Guy and the staff took the time to explain to me the importance of having one done with my exam. My prescription was a perfect match for what I needed. The staff was really friendly and rally pleasant. I also really liked that I was able to fill out most of the necessary forms before my appointment from my phone. Definitely a time saver.

I was not a eye glass wearer for most of my 59 years... Over the past few years I've gotten to a po... int where I need them. I tried a few other places before finding Family Vision. I just could not get used the glasses. My choices were to either wear something I couldn't get used to, or wear nothing and see nothing... All of the people at FVC were sincere in their efforts to help me find something that would work for me. I now have a pair of glasses I can both see and wear comfortably. I would recommend them to anyone - they were all very friendly and welcoming.

How to Prepare for Cataract Surgery

  • Apply antibiotic or anti-inflammatory eyedrops a few days before surgery if instructed to by your eye doctor
  • Arrange for a ride after the surgery, since you won’t be able to drive
  • Wash your face in the morning of the procedure and don’t wear eye makeup, strong perfumes or aftershave

What Happens During Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery removes your natural cloudy lens and replaces it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) to improve and restore vision. This common and very safe procedure is performed by an eye doctor (ophthalmologist) on an outpatient basis.

  • The eye surgeon (ophthalmologist) will perform cataract surgery on one eye at a time. That means that you will come in for another surgery on the second eye. The procedure is brief and typically takes 30 to 45 minutes to complete.
  • The eye doctor will place drops into your eyes to numb them and dilate your pupils. Though you’ll be conscious during the procedure, you may be offered a sedative to help you remain calm. The eye surgeon will then remove your natural lens and replace it with the IOL. You should feel no pain or discomfort thanks to the anesthetic.

Cataract Surgery After-Care

Senior couple with glasses

After surgery, you may feel a bit drowsy as an after-effect of the sedative. Your eye doctor will prescribe eye drops to prevent infection, inflammation and to reduce pressure within your eye. The surgeon may recommend that you wear an eye patch for a few days after your surgery and the protective shield when you sleep during the recovery period. Make sure to avoid rubbing your eyes or touching them unless necessary.

A day after cataract surgery, we'll provide a post-operative eye exam to make sure that all is well. Your Rochester optometrist will further perform a series of follow-up exams in the weeks and months to come. If determined that you require corrective lenses following your cataract surgery, we'll make sure you get the proper prescription.

Cataract Surgery Management FAQs

What are side effects of cataract surgery?

While side effects are rare, there are some issues that people commonly encounter in the days after surgery, as the eyes heal.

  • Dry eye
  • Feeling that something is in the eye
  • Blurry vision
  • Light sensitivity

If any of these side effects do not subside within a week or two, please contact Family Vision Center - Rochester.

Can I delay cataract surgery

You can delay cataract surgery, but keep in mind that your vision will likely worsen the longer you put off the procedure.

When is cataract surgery not recommended?

Cataract patients who also have age-related macular degeneration or retinal detachment may not respond well to cataract surgery and the new lens may not correct vision.

Can cataract surgery give me 20/20 vision?

If you had great vision before developing cataracts, it’s likely that cataract surgery will restore your sight. Moreover, the IOL inserted into your eye can be designed to correct refractive errors, providing you with clear vision.
