Your Vision. Your Future.

Is your child having a hard time seeing the board in class?

Do you struggle to read fine-print in books and menus?

Regular comprehensive eye exams involve a series of tests that enable your Rochester eye doctor to check your eye health and vision. This type of eye exam can only be performed by an eye doctor, and shouldnโ€™t be confused with the vision screenings given in schools or other non-professional settings.

Having regular comprehensive eye exams is crucial when it comes to protecting your eyes from sight-threatening diseases, and ensuring that your optical prescription is up-to-date.

A comprehensive eye exam can also reveal signs of a general health condition like diabetes, hypertension or high cholesterol.

Why Is It Important to Get Your Eyes Tested Regularly?

Eye Exam Asian Man Rubs Eye

Comprehensive eye exams are an important part of maintaining great vision and eye health for the entire family.

During your eye exam, your eye doctor will check for any refractive errors or visual skill deficiencies that may hinder development or learning, and diagnose, manage, and treat eye diseases and conditions, including glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy or macular degeneration that can cause severe vision loss in adults.

Many of these sight-robbing conditions show little to no symptoms until theyโ€™ve already caused learning difficulties, significant damage to the eye, and/or irreversible vision loss. Routine eye exams ensure early diagnosis and treatment of these and other conditions.

What to Expect From Your Eye Exam

  • Glasses/contact lens prescription updates

We'll provide you with an updated prescription so that you can see clearly. Some people require a new prescription every year, whereas others only need a new prescription every 2-3 years.

  • Evaluating your childโ€™s vision for learning

Conditions such as strabismus and amblyopia, and visual skill deficiencies such as convergence insufficiency can negatively impact your childโ€™s learning.

  • Diagnosis & treatment of eye diseases

Eye diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy may show no symptoms until itโ€™s too late. The earlier the treatment, the more effective the outcome.

  • Rule out signs of systemic diseases

Common systemic diseases such as diabetes and stroke can first be detected in the eyes as part of a comprehensive eye exam.

Great people and very thorough exam! I recently went for another exam and again it was very thorough... . I had ordered new glasses and the woman said they would call when they were ready and I could just stop by to pick them up. Well I stopped by and the only person who could give me my glasses was out to lunch! They asked if I could wait 30 mins or so. I had no time to wait she said your best bet is to come after 2:00 so again I stopped by after 2:30 and she was out to lunch and again she said could you wait 25 minutes! I told the receptionist that this was very inconventient and left. I called that Thurdsay and left a voice mail to make an appt for Friday at 12:00 to pick up my glasses, no one returned my call. I called Monday and the receptionist said just stop in the women should be here, she might not go to lunch until 12:30 it just depends on when the manager goes to lunch! I said I really do not care about any of that, I said can I stop in between 12:00 and 12:15 today yes or no! She said yes I went and was there maybe 5 min The new womaen was very nice and efficent she fitted me with my glasses and I left. Do not drop in, make an appt to get fitted for your glasses! They really need to change this policy.

Warning: lengthy review! Before coming here, I saw the same eye doctor since I first got glasses in ... 2nd grade (I am 25 now). Although I loved my previous eye doctor, I decided to try a new office because I was treated poorly by the office staff there. I chose Dr. Guy based on the positive reviews on Google and I am so happy I did! The office staff is incredibly kind and helpful. Dr. Guy spent 2 hours with me at my first visit doing a complete glasses and contact exam plus dilation. I really felt like he did an extremely thorough exam and he patiently answered my questions and concerns. I was given two kinds of contacts to sample before choosing which ones I wanted. Then I worked with Valeriy to choose my glasses. I was willing to spend a high amount on these because I never buy full strength glasses due to my high prescription (-8.00 in both eyes). I always had trouble with minimizing facial distortion because my prescription is so awful, but Valeriy helped me choose the best frames and lenses to accommodate this issue (rounder frame and higher index digital lenses). For the first time in years I actually love how I look in glasses! Also, at my last office it used to take weeks for my glasses to come in because of the high prescription. Here, I got my glasses 5 days after picking them out and getting all the measurements done! My entire experience here was positive from start to finish and I am so happy I found them. Thank you all at Family Vision Center ๐Ÿ™‚

My 10 yo son got ortho-K lenses at Family Vision Center in the summer of 2019. Dr. Guy is very profe... ssional and kind - my son introduced Dr. Guy as "the nicest doctor ever" to his little sister. He has been doing very well with the lenses and taking good care of them, thanks to good teaching and close follow-ups with Dr. Guy. I am very satisfied with the result and service so far. I personally think the cost is reasonable given multiple follow-ups with numerous eye exams, always with Dr. Guy. I also like that the clinic appointment is almost always readily available and very quick. He had been initially referred to the other vision clinic by his ophthalmologist which was the only place the doctor knew prescribing ortho-K lenses . However the earliest appointment was 5 months far with that eye clinic. I looked up every eye clinic website in Rochester and called the clinics which introduces ortho-K lenses on their homepage. I got to know FVC with the 4th or 5th call and made an appointment in 1 week. It is such a huge gap in waiting time almost made me feel dumb and unreal. FVC is probably one of the very few places in Rochester which serves ortho-K lenses now. I strongly recommend here if you're interested in the ortho-K lenses.

Had an awesome experience getting a way overdue eye exam. I was hesitant at first to do an eye dilat... ion exam but Dr. Guy and the staff took the time to explain to me the importance of having one done with my exam. My prescription was a perfect match for what I needed. The staff was really friendly and rally pleasant. I also really liked that I was able to fill out most of the necessary forms before my appointment from my phone. Definitely a time saver.

I was not a eye glass wearer for most of my 59 years... Over the past few years I've gotten to a po... int where I need them. I tried a few other places before finding Family Vision. I just could not get used the glasses. My choices were to either wear something I couldn't get used to, or wear nothing and see nothing... All of the people at FVC were sincere in their efforts to help me find something that would work for me. I now have a pair of glasses I can both see and wear comfortably. I would recommend them to anyone - they were all very friendly and welcoming.

Comprehensive Eye Exams FAQs

Is a comprehensive eye exam the same as a vision screening?

No. Vision screenings like the one performed for children in school or at optical-only stores only check for 20/20 vision. They do not check for the presence of sight-threatening eye diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration or cataracts. They also do not check for visual skill deficiencies such as problems with visual tracking or processing. Comprehensive eye exams are more thorough and use advanced equipment to evaluate your vision and eye health.

How often should I get an eye exam?

Eye doctors usually recommend that you come in for a comprehensive eye exam at least once a year. This ensures that your glasses or contact lens prescription stays up to date and that signs and symptoms of developing eye conditions are caught early before they cause lasting damage.

When should I bring my child in for their first comprehensive eye exam?

A childโ€™s first eye exam should take place at age 6 months. Itโ€™s important not to delay eye exams for young infants and children as some early eye problems can affect vision for life. Detecting vision problems early can keep a minor issue from becoming something serious (and more challenging to treat).
